The Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence was established in 2004 and is presented annually to the high school coach in the City of Hamilton, Ontario who best exemplifies the attributes of teacher, coach, and friend personified by John Wismer. This Award gives the Hamilton community an opportunity to honor talented, inspiring, and dedicated coaches whose efforts sometimes go unnoticed.

The Award recognizes coaches who make a significant contribution to student athletes, and as a result, enhance the status of high school coaching in Hamilton. John Wismer was a talented, innovative and spirited teacher and coach, who for more than thirty-three years inspired student athletes to do their very best at all times in all facets of life. Those he taught, and coached mattered greatly to him, and he cared deeply about their aspirations and well-being. Long after their high school days, he followed their progress and encouraged them to pursue their dreams. John believed in teamwork, and community. Above all, he believed winning in both life and sports was special, and that you got there with focus, determination, and commitment.
