The Wismer Foundation and the Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence Selection Committee are delighted to announce this year's five finalists for the Award. All five nominees are teachers and coaches and long time contributors to the Hamilton high school coaching scene. Each is a dedicated, innovative, and outstanding member of their respective school board and the Hamilton community. This year’s five finalists for the 2nd Annual Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence are:

Gary Banting – Waterdown District High School

  • Coached varsity girls volleyball for sixteen years, and boys hockey
  • Girls volleyball team won bronze at OFSAA in 2001, gold at OFSAA in
  • 2003 and 2004, and a silver at OFSAA in 2005
  • Taken teams to Russia, Finland, Cuba and the U.S. to compete outside of local high school league
  • Soft spoken, determined, positive influence in the school and community

Greg Higson – Hillfield Strathallan College

  • Began his teaching and coaching career in the HWIAC in 1981 and retired in 2005
  • Coached football, basketball, golf, volleyball, and track and field as a throws coach-shotput/discus
  • Division Three HWIAC football champions in 2003, boys basketball OFSAA Tier Two champs 2004
  • Coached female golfer to a OFSAA silver in 2005 and, like other nominees, gives unselfishly to his community as a volunteer including many years as hockey referee

Antoinette Krusto – Cardinal Newman Catholic High School

  • Coaching since 1974, Cardinal Newman since 1976, has coached field hockey, basketball, swimming, cross country, golf, and boys and girls volleyball
  • Cardinal Newman senior girls volleyball team has played in league championships 21 of the last 25 years
  • Senior teams have won 21 HWAC, and 4 GHAC titles and have made 4 OFSAA appearances
  • Coached Team Hamilton volleyball at Children’s International Games in 2000

Wilf Reed – Ancaster High School

  • Thirty one years as a teacher/coach... retired in January 2005 but returned to coach junior and senior girls water polo
  • coached volleyball, hockey, curling, swimming, waterpolo and football
  • football teams have consistently been competitive under his long time leadership
  • teaching, coaching, personal fitness and well being have been his hallmarks

Mike Smith – Highland Secondary School

  • Seven years coaching indoor/outdoor track and field and cross country
  • Despite being a smaller school, eighty athletes have competed at OFSAA winning two medals

Other outstanding coaches nominated this year included:

Brad Bonitatibus – St. Jean de Brebeuf
Frank Hayes – Delta
Sean Kiely – St. Mary's
Kevin Monaco – St. Mary’s, and
Paul Pendakis – Saltfleet

The Wismer Foundation’s Selection Committee is proud and delighted that this year's nominees are once again, an exceptional group of worthy coaches. The most pleasing and impressive credential, common to all five finalists, is their focus on the student athlete. To a person, each of the five finalists exemplifies, above all, that the student athlete really matters to them and that they care deeply about each one of them.

The Wismer Foundation Golf Tournament

The Wismer Foundation Golf Tournament and Coaching Award Presentation Dinner is the primary FUNDRAISER to support the foundation. This event hosts the presentation of the Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence. The tournament is being held on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at Carlisle Golf and Country Club located at 523 Carlisle Road, Carlisle, Ontario.

Nomination deadline for the 15th Annual Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence is April 24, 2018. Nominations received after April 24th will be considered for the 2018/19 Award on May 28, 2019.
