Media Release 2006

The Wismer Foundation and the Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence Selection Committee are delighted to announce this year's five finalists for the Award. All five nominees are teachers and coaches and long time contributors to the Hamilton high school coaching scene. Each is a dedicated, innovative, and outstanding member of their respective school board and the Hamilton community. This year’s five finalists for the 3rd Annual Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence are:

Gary Banting- Waterdown District High School

  • coached varsity girls volleyball for sixteen years, and boys hockey
  • has won 7 City championships and 5 OFSAA medals
  • girls volleyball team won bronze at OFSAA in 2001, gold at OFSAA in 2003 and 2004, and silver at OFSAA in 2005 and 2006
  • taken teams to Russia, Finland, Cuba, the Dominican and the U.S. to compete

Anthony Herrington- Sherwood Secondary School

  • 9 years coaching hockey
  • has won 3 City championships, has been to OFSAA once
  • initiated a high school credit for hockey-the Hockey Canada Skills Academy and was featured on CBC
  • has also coached Triple A and Junior A hockey in Hamilton

Mark Kovacs- Cardinal Newman Catholic Secondary School

  • 34 years coaching, 30 at Cardinal Newman
  • coached volleyball, basketball, indoor and outdoor soccer
  • 78 championship teams including league, tournament and provincial play, 3 OFSAA championships
  • taken the soccer team to Italy and placed first overall in the tournament

Mike Smith- Highland Secondary School

  • 9 years coaching indoor/outdoor track and field and cross country
  • coached girls soccer, badminton, volleyball and water polo
  • despite being a smaller school, eighty athletes have competed at OFSAA winning two medals
  • overall City track and field champs three consecutive years and placed second three consecutive years

Bob Wynne- Ancaster High School

  • 32 years coaching basketball
  • won 3rd at OFSAA in 1988, won SOSSA in 1998 and 2000, won the Silver Fox in 2000, and City champions four times, Zone champions 8 times
  • coached basketball at McMaster University for four years
  • not a teacher but volunteers to coach

Other outstanding coaches nominated this year included:

Diana Cuncic- St Thomas More; Stefano Giovanangeli- St Thomas More; Frank Hayes- Delta; Russ McLeod- Westmount; Kevin Monaco- St. Mary’s; Glenda Smith- Waterdown; and Michelle Vesprini- Cathedral

John Michaluk, Chairman of the Wismer Foundation’s Selection Committee said, “the Committee are proud and delighted that this year's nominees are once again, an exceptional group of worthy coaches”. The most pleasing and impressive credential, common to the final five, is their focus on the student athlete. Student athletes matter and coaches care is a basic belief each nominee shares.

The 3rd Annual Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence will be presented to one of the Final Five nominees at the Wismer Foundation Golf Tournament and Award Presentation Dinner on Tuesday, September 12th, 2006 at Carlisle Golf and Country Club. The Wismer Foundation Golf Tournament

The Wismer Foundation Golf Tournament and Coaching Award Presentation Dinner is the primary FUNDRAISER to support the foundation. This event hosts the presentation of the Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence. The tournament is being held on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at Carlisle Golf and Country Club located at 523 Carlisle Road, Carlisle, Ontario.

Nomination deadline for the 15th Annual Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence is April 24, 2018. Nominations received after April 24th will be considered for the 2018/19 Award on May 28, 2019.
