4th Annual Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence

The Wismer Foundation and the Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence Selection Committee are delighted to announce the 2007 recipient of the 4th Annual Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence.
Claudio Silvestri of St Thomas More Catholic Secondary School, Hamilton, Ontario is this year’s recipient of the Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence. He was selected from five finalists who were once again this year an exceptional group of worthy coaches. The most notable and impressive credential common to all nominees is their focus on the student athlete. An important view, shared by each nominee, is that student athletes matter and coaches care.

Claudio Silvestri - St Thomas More

  • born in Hamilton, graduated from McMaster University with a degree in Political Science
  • first time nominee and first time finalist… teaches religion, physical education and political science
  • fifteen years experience as a high school football coach…and entering his ninth year as head coach senior football, St Thomas More
  • two City Senior football championships, most recently in 2006
  • Provincial and Regional senior football champions in 2006
  • five years coaching at the Steel City Senior Bowl High School Football All Star Classic
  • coaching assistant McMaster Marauders football in 1996
  • has conducted a winter workout program for his team’s players since 1998
  • St Thomas More football teams have regularly competed against top calibre U.S. high school teams in Ohio           and Pennsylvania.

Family spokesperson Betty Wismer said, “we are pleased with Claudio’s selection because he exemplifies determination, commitment and integrity, all highly valued coaching qualities.” Selection Committee member John Michaluk described the first time nominee as, “a quiet, talented, and caring coach who is a positive influence in the school and the community.” Special guest speaker Rabbi Bernard Baskin said “our city is a better place because these dedicated teachers and coaches contribute significantly to the development of young people during an important time in their journey to adulthood”. Claudio joins previous recipients George Knill, Antoinette Krusto, and Gary Banting.

This year’s finalists for the 4th Annual Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence were:
Kim Klodt- Barton Secondary School, Hamilton; Mark Kovacs- Cardinal Newman High School, Stoney Creek; Brenda Nelson- Parkside High School, Dundas, and Rich Wesolowski- St. Mary’s High School, Hamilton.
All finalists have been long time contributors to the Hamilton high school coaching scene and valuable leaders in the community.

Next year’s event will include a special 50th Reunion Celebration honouring Coach John Wismer’s first team, the 1958 Central High School Junior’s, and more than thirty members of that team will be in attendance.

The Wismer Foundation Golf Tournament


The Wismer Foundation Golf Tournament and Coaching Award Presentation Dinner is the primary FUNDRAISER to support the foundation. This event hosts the presentation of the Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence. The tournament is being held on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at Carlisle Golf and Country Club located at 523 Carlisle Road, Carlisle, Ontario.

Nomination deadline for the 15th Annual Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence is April 24, 2018. Nominations received after April 24th will be considered for the 2018/19 Award on May 28, 2019.
