 5th Annual Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence

The Wismer Foundation and the Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence Selection Committee are delighted to announce the 2008 recipient of the 5th Annual Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence.
Brenda Nelson of Parkside High School, Dundas, Ontario is this year’s recipient of the Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence. She was selected from five finalists who were once again this year an exceptional group of worthy coaches. The most notable and impressive credential common to all nominees is their focus on the student athlete. An important view, shared by each nominee, is that student athletes matter and coaches care.
Brenda Nelson- Parkside High School

  • three time nominee and two time finalist
  • thirty one years coaching, has coached girls basketball, boys volleyball, badminton, softball, tennis, track and field 
  • eleven City basketball championships, most recently City Midget girls basketball champions in 2007, senior girls won silver at OFSAA, and three SOSSA championships
  • taken teams to Hawaii, Cuba and Florida
  • memorable moment- Gold Medal match 2006…leading by one point at half time…telling the team ”remember what this feels like” ..just in case…
  • admires Coach Lisa Thomaidis, Tanya Taite, Michelle Vesprini, Vicki Harrison, Earl Begg-“ all the people who have given back to their sport”….

Family spokesperson Betty Wismer said, “we are pleased with Brenda’s selection because she exemplifies determination, commitment and integrity, all highly valued coaching qualities.” Selection Committee members described the third time nominee as, “a spirited, talented, and caring coach who is a positive influence in the school and the community.” Brenda joins previous recipients George Knill, Antoinette Krusto, Gary Banting and Claudio Silvestri.

This year’s finalists for the 5th Annual Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence were:
Wilf Reed- Ancaster High School, Ancaster,  Tom Spironello- St Thomas More Catholic High School, Hamilton, Chris Thomaidis- Sherwood High School, Hamilton,  and Jim Weatherbee- Saltfleet High School, Stoney Creek..
All finalists have been long time contributors to the Hamilton high school coaching scene and valuable leaders in the community.

This year’s event included a special 50th Reunion Celebration honouring Coach John Wismer’s first team, the 1958 Central High School Junior’s, and more than twenty members of that team were in attendance.

The Wismer Foundation Golf Tournament


The Wismer Foundation Golf Tournament and Coaching Award Presentation Dinner is the primary FUNDRAISER to support the foundation. This event hosts the presentation of the Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence. The tournament is being held on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at Carlisle Golf and Country Club located at 523 Carlisle Road, Carlisle, Ontario.

Nomination deadline for the 15th Annual Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence is April 24, 2018. Nominations received after April 24th will be considered for the 2018/19 Award on May 28, 2019.
