6th Annual Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence

The Wismer Foundation and the Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence Selection Committee are delighted to announce this year's five finalists for the Award.  All five nominees are teachers and coaches and long time contributors to the Hamilton high school coaching scene.  Each is a dedicated, innovative, and outstanding member of their respective school board and the Hamilton community. This year’s five finalists for the 6th Annual Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence are:

Stefano Giovananngelli- St Thomas More Catholic Secondary School

  • two time nominee and first time finalist
  • twelve years coaching, coached boys basketball and football
  • seven City basketball championships, one GHAC championship, three All Ontario Championships and three City football championships
  • taken teams to thunder bay, Windsor, Ottawa, Kitchener, St Catharines, Toronto, and Erie, PA
  • admires any coach who treats his players with respect, has high expectations and teaches life lessons
  • admires the intensity of Jon Gruden and the “Zen” like approach of Phil Jackson
  • best coaching moment: the look of immense joy in all the polayers after winning the championship ganme in the STM gym

Frank Hayes- Delta Secondary School

  • four time nominee and first time finalist
  • twenty two years coaching
  • coached boys and girls touch  football, boys tackle football, girls and boys hockey and boys basketball
  • girls City hockey champions five years in a row, boys touch football four years straight- twice
  • admires coach Jason Hayes
  • best coaching moment; Delta playing Hill Park in the football championship- won in the last minute of triple overtime!

Sean Kiely- St Mary’s Catholic Secondary School

  • three time nominee and first time finalist
  • twenty seven years coaching
  • coached soccer, cross country, and track and field
  • thirteen outdoor championships, fifteen indoor championships, two OFSAA golds
  • taken teams to Perth, Liverpool, Aberdeen, Venice, Florence and Rome
  • admires coach Al Kingston
  • best coaching moment; winning their first gold at Laurentian University in 2000

Jos Nederveen- St Mary’s Catholic Secondary School

  • two  time nominee and first time finalist
  • thirty five years coaching
  • coached volleyball, track and field and squash
  • nineteen city volleyball championships, six GHAC gold medals, two OFSAA silver medals, two OFSAA bronze medals
  • would have liked to have coached with Antoinette Krusto, Joe Dittrapoani, Cecelia Carter Smith and Keith Waslick
  • best coaching moment; won sportsmanship award at highschool (ISF) world championships in France

Jim Weatherbee- Saltfleet District High School

  • third time nominee and second time finalist
  • twenty eight years coaching
  • coaches basketball, but is not a teacher
  • one city midget basketball championship, six city junior championships, three city senior city championships
  • taken teams to New York, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Kentucky and California
  • admires coach Ken Omerod, Ed Turek, Gord McRae, and Dennis Griffin
  • best coaching moment; “there are many good times to mention, but the best part is building lasting lifelong friendships!”

Other outstanding coaches nominated this year included:

Frank Falcone- St Thomas More, Dino Perri- St Thomas More, Anthony Macaluso- Cardinal Newman, Paul Guagliano- Westmount; Mark Daly- Cathedral; John Mamuza- Sir John A McDonald; Jim McDonald- Orchard Park; jan Pearson- Sir Winston Churchill; Maritn Vallincourt- Mere Teresa; and Doug Holmes- Barton.

The 6th Annual Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence will be presented to one of the Final Five nominees at the Wismer Foundation Golf Tournament and Award Presentation Dinner on Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 at Carlisle Golf and Country Club. The Wismer Foundation Golf Tournament


The Wismer Foundation Golf Tournament and Coaching Award Presentation Dinner is the primary FUNDRAISER to support the foundation. This event hosts the presentation of the Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence. The tournament is being held on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at Carlisle Golf and Country Club located at 523 Carlisle Road, Carlisle, Ontario.

Nomination deadline for the 15th Annual Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence is April 24, 2018. Nominations received after April 24th will be considered for the 2018/19 Award on May 28, 2019.
