The Wismer Foundation and the Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence Selection Committee are delighted to announce this year's five finalists for the Award. All six nominees are teachers and coaches and long time contributors to the Hamilton high school coaching scene. Each is a dedicated, innovative, and outstanding member of their respective school board and the Hamilton community. This year's six finalists for the 12th Annual Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence are:

Andrew Baillie- Ancaster  first time nominee and first time finalist

  • eleven years coaching, coached basketball
  • five City championships, SOSSA Champs three times, nine city championship appearances, five SOSAA final appearances,
  •  Coached Sr. Boy’s Elementary Finals (Ancaster Meadow) & OUA Men’s Basketball Bronze Medalist (McMaster University
  • Admires coach:Wilf Reed. There are also characteristics of Ray Smith, Jim Valvano, Tom Izzo and Bill Shankly that I attempt to emulate every time I put a whistle on.

Brian Fuller-Saltfleet   first time nominee and first time finalist

  •  thirty nine years coaching, coached basketball, volleyball and track
  • three City SOSSA champs, one OFSAA championship
  • Received the Investors Group-Volunteer Administrator Award, the Peter Beach Award and the Silaps Award
  • Ccoached for Basketball Ontario, the Regional Provincial team, and Regional Development OBA x 5 years, Regional rep for OFSSA x 15 years... Member of the SOSSA and HWIAC Boards.. A behind the scenes kind of guy…who can’t say no…sitting on a multitude of committee’s
  • Admires coach: Pete Pattereson, Jim Leavens, Bob Krouse

Peter Luvisa- St Thomas More   third  time nominee and third  time finalist

  • twenty six years coaching, coached junior football, track
  • seven City football championships, eleven football championship appearances, multiple undefeated seasons
  • Admires Coach: He is inspired and motivated to coach by all coaches who prepare their teams and players well. They are the ones who challenge him to do the best he can in order to compete at their level.

Anthony Macaluso- Cardinal Newman   fourth time nominee and second time finalist

  • eleven years coaching, has coached hockey, soccer, football, track
  • nineteen City Championships, finalists seven times, two OFSAA soccer medals, hockey football and track
  • assistant coach Hamilton Hurricanes
  • Admires coach: all the teachers who gave their time so I could play so many sports myself in high school, and they’re the reason I coach all the sports I do…to pay it back!

. Liz Piccioni- Ancaster   first time nominee and first time finalist

  • seventeen years coaching, coaches soccer, cross country, basketball and volleyball
  • three City Soccer championships, three OFSAA appearances, one SOSSA championship, Cross county- OFSAA seven times
  • Admires coach: Wilf Reed, Al Robertson, Ralph Ferguson, Mike Walsh, Mike Scheer, Lou Angel…coaches who are in it for the growth and development of the student athletes.

Dave Walters- Westdale Secondary School   fourth time nominee and first time finalist

  • nineteen years coaching, coached football, waterpolo, and powerlifting
  • eleven football championships, three waterpolo championships, seven regional, and five provincial powerlifting championships, three times he has been a world powerlifting master
  • Admires coach: Mark Brown who he coaches with now

 

Other outstanding coaches nominated this year included: - Dino Cavarzan-Bishop Tonnos, Mark Kislinsky-St Thomas More, Dave Ormerod- Saltfleet, and Mike Varasso- Breubeuf.

The 12th Annual Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence will be presented to one of the Final Six nominees at the Wismer Foundation Golf Tournament and Award Presentation Dinner on Tuesday, May 26th at Carlisle Golf and Country Club.
